A wire drawing guide defines the path the wire follows on drawing, winding and twisting lines, working in continuous contact with the wire. In copper wire production the hardness and surface roughness of the guide directly affect wire surface quality and break frequency: every groove that forms on the contact surface is carried into the following drawing stages as a defect. Guides are made in bead, roller, tube and rod forms; the form is chosen for the contact geometry of the line.

What the ceramic surface does on a drawing line

On a drawing line the guide is exposed to continuous friction under high speed and wire tension. The behaviour of ceramic materials under these conditions differs measurably from metal and plastic counterparts.

  • High surface hardness (Vickers hardness reaching 19 GPa in E-500 alumina) prevents groove formation on the contact surface; the guide keeps its form even at high speeds.
  • Controlled surface roughness (Ra) prevents scratching and breaking of the wire; the polishing grade (standard, matte, diamond) is chosen for the application.
  • The pore-free microstructure has 0% water absorption; the guide is unaffected by cooling emulsions and drawing lubricants.
  • A low thermal expansion coefficient keeps the form and dimensional tolerances stable under frictional heat.

Material selection: alumina, titania, zirconia

The guide material is chosen according to line speed, wire material and contact geometry. The alumina grades (E-100–E-500) are produced at different purity and hardness levels; the highest purity and hardness belong to E-500, preferred on lines with high speed and tension. Zirconia (E-Z) is used where high flexural strength and impact resistance are required; conductive titania (E-TB) where static build-up must be prevented. At hot contact points such as annealing-furnace exits low thermal expansion is decisive; on lines before enamel coating, surface roughness is.     The common choice is the alumina grades (E-100–E-500); at high speed and tension E-500 is the optimum solution. Zirconia (E-Z) is used in positions carrying impact risk, and conductive titania (E-TB) on lines where static build-up must be prevented.
