A yarn guide — also known in the field as a ceramic eyelet — defines the path the yarn follows on the line, working in continuous contact with the yarn. The eyelet bore and contact radius are chosen for the yarn count (denier/Ne), line speed and wrap angle. In spinning, winding, twisting, knitting and weaving processes the hardness and surface roughness of the guide are among the main determinants of hairiness, filament breaks and variation in yarn quality.

What the ceramic surface does on a yarn line
Yarn passes over the guide surface at high speed and under tension. The micro-topography of the surface works directly into the yarn: a worn or scratched guide increases hairiness and filament breaks.
- High surface hardness prevents groove formation under continuous yarn passage; the guide form and the yarn path do not change over time.
- Controlled surface roughness (Ra) preserves the yarn structure; hairiness and filament break rates fall to a minimum.
- Soft-surface titania (E-TY) prevents filament breakage; conductive titania (E-TB) prevents static build-up on synthetic yarns.
- The pore-free microstructure has 0% water absorption; the guide is unaffected by moisture and process chemicals.

Material selection: alumina, titania, zirconia
The material is chosen according to line speed, ambient conditions and the mechanical stress on the yarn. E-500 alumina is the optimum solution at high speed and tension; soft-surface E-TY is used to prevent filament breakage, conductive E-TB against static build-up, and zirconia (E-Z) where impact resistance is required.
